Southern Snow Update;
Third Highest Snow Event at Huntsville

The National Weather Service reported this morning that the January 9-10 snowstorm was the 3rd highest snow event in Huntsville, Alabama history. Huntsville climate records extend back to 1894. According the the NWS preliminary data, 8.9" fell in the current event. The top 5 events are:
1. NEW YEARS 1963-64....17.1"  
2. JANUARY 7-8 1988......9.6"
3. JANUARY 9-10 2011.....8.9"
4. FEBRUARY 15 1958......8.0"
5. JANUARY 29-30 1936....7.5"
The 6.5" on Sunday, January 9, was the 5th highest for a calendar day:
1. 15.7 INCHES...12-31-1963  
2. 8.0 INCHES...02-15-1958
3. 7.2 INCHES...01-29-1966
4. 7.1 INCHES...01-07-1988
5. 6.5 INCHES...01-09-2011
The 11.7" so far this season makes it the 3rd snowiest winter at Huntsville:
